How to Configure Proxy on iPhone

A proxy is a layer of protection for your iPhone to defend against cyber threats. Each time you visit a website with a proxy, the host decides whether you can proceed and access the site. A proxy screens the website you want to go to for potential malware and viruses.

When you configure a proxy server for a WiFi network, your iPhone or iPad will use it to get access to that network. This is sometimes required to access the Internet on a business or school network. Your network traffic will be channeled through the proxy server that you create.

There are several reasons why you may use a proxy on your iPhone. You can choose to go online anonymously, access geographically restricted websites, or set up filters to stop access to inappropriate content. A proxy helps you with all of that. Luckily, you can apply a proxy on your iPhone without hassle. Let’s learn how to set up a proxy and find your proxy server address on your iPhone and iPad.

How to Set Up a Proxy on iPhone & iPad

Setting up a proxy server on your Apple device is as easy as connecting to a network. Follow the steps below to take advantage of a proxy on your iPhone/iPad.

  1. Go to Settings on your iPhone and navigate to WiFi.
  2. Then select a WiFi network to set up a proxy server and tap the information icon next to it.
  3. Now scroll down and select Configure Proxy under HTTP Proxy.
  4. Choose Automatic, and you’ll see the URL. Type in the address of the proxy auto-configuration script and tap on Save. Your Apple device will now use the proxy auto-configuration script to enable the proxy.

If you leave the URL field empty and save it, your iPhone will use the Web Proxy Autodiscovery configuration. This protocol inspects your WiFi network to see if it requires a proxy. Additionally, it automatically configures a proxy if required.

If your network administrator or proxy service provider requires using a proxy auto-configuration script, expect them to provide you with the address of a .PAC file.

How to Find Proxy Server Address on iPhone

Without a proxy, your iPhone connects directly to the internet to access the website for you. With a proxy, however, your iPhone will establish a connection through a separate server, the proxy, that sits between the computer and the internet.

You can always check if you are using a proxy by checking your IP Address. If your IP address has changed, you have successfully set up a proxy on your iPhone. Simply look up “what's my ip address” and you’ll see several websites that read and show your IP instantly.

Also, remember that when setting up a proxy for a WiFi network on your iPhone, you are only doing it for that specific WiFi network. If you switch to another WiFi network, then you need to configure the proxy for that specific network.

How to Turn Off a Proxy Server on iPhone or iPad

Hackers typically use proxies to hide malicious activity online. The attacker makes a copy of the targeted website on a proxy server and uses different SEO tricks such as link building from external websites to boost ranking on search result pages.

The proxy option in iPhones and iPads is set to Off by default, so your device won’t use any proxy when connected to the network. You can always disable the proxy for your WiFi network on your iPhone or iPad. The steps are almost identical and can be carried out pretty easily.

First, you need to open your iPhone’s Settings and tap on WiFi. Next, select the information icon next to the WiFi network for which you had used a proxy server. Then navigate to HTTP Proxy and select Configure Proxy. Finally, tap on Off and then save the process.

iPhones let you mask your IP address easily to protect your private information from cyber criminals. Proxy Servers are effective to reach that goal, but they are not the only option. Other security solutions, such as VPNs, provide useful features and won’t bother you with Identity Theft, Virus Attack, and data breach.
