What Is the Difference between Router IP and Default Gateway IP

If you are interested in the way you connect to the internet you probably know that there are two different IP addresses involved when you are getting online. One the world sees, the other only you see. Let’s slightly dig into the topic.

Your router has two IP addresses: one public, or external, called WAN (Wide-Area Network), and a private, also known as LAN (Local Area Network) or default gateway IP.

WAN is your Router IP, and it is used to connect to the world. It is assigned by your Internet Service Provider. This public IP address is a mark that every other network or computer in the world will know. It usually consists of four sets of digits separated by three dots. WAN IP will change if you connect to another network with your laptop and go on the web in a different place, like a hotel, restaurant, or airport.

A LAN or private IP address is your local area network IP address, also known as the Gateway IP address is used by devices in your home network. You can’t use it to access your computer remotely or send any traffic to it. It is provided by your router for your home network only. It is also the IP address you need to know if you want to access your router settings. For this, you just need to enter it in a browser’s address bar on any device connected to the network, log in, and start setting up your router.

How to Find Router IP Address with Command Prompt on Windows

1. In the search bar, type cmd to open the command prompt.
2. Type ipconfig.
3. In the results you get, look for the default gateway address – it’s your router IP.

How to Find Router IP Address with the Control Panel on Windows

1. Find the Windows search bar and type Control Panel in the search box. You can also click the Control Panel icon on your desktop if you have it.
2. Find the clickable View network status and tasks link under Network and Internet.
3. Click on your WiFi network near the link for Connection on the right. If your PC is connected to the router with a cable, this might say Connection: Ethernet instead.
4. Go to Details in the pop-up window.
5. In the next window, you can find your router’s IP address in the middle of the list next to IPv4 Default Gateway. It consists of four digits divided by three dots.

How to Find Router IP Address with System Preferences on Mac

1. Open System Preferences.
2. Go to Network. 
3. Select the relevant network connection. 
4. Click Advanced. 
5. Navigate to the TCP/IP tab and find your router’s IP address in the Router field.  

How to Find Router IP on Linux 

1. Navigate to Applications > System Tools > Terminal.
2. Type ipconfig. 
3. Check your router’s IP in the field named inet addr. 

How to Find Router IP Address on Chrome OS

1. Go to the notification area on the right side of your taskbar.
2. Choose the Connected to [Network Name] option in the pop-up window.
3. Choose the name of the WiFi network you’re connected to.
4. When the Settings window opens, click the Network tab and you’ll see the router’s address in the Gateway line.
